  • Completion of 1+ year(s) of full-time study or a 3+ credit academic English course: Post-Secondary (or higher) applicants are required to demonstrate the completion of at least one year of full-time study where the language of instruction was English. Alternatively, applicants can fulfill this requirement by completing a 3+ credit academic English course from a Canadian post-secondary institution.
  • Successful completion of an accredited University’s English preparation program: Applicants can provide evidence of English proficiency by successfully completing an English preparation program offered by an accredited university. This option allows individuals to showcase their language skills in an academic context.
  • Successful completion of a recognized English preparation course from another institution: Applicants can demonstrate English proficiency by completing a recognized English preparation course from an institution other than UNF. This option is available to students who have proven their language abilities at a level equivalent to or better than the required IELTS score.
  • Successful completion of ON English 12 or English 12 First Peoples (or equivalent) in Canada: Applicants who have completed ON English 12 or English 12 First Peoples (or an equivalent course) as part of a high school graduation program in Canada are considered to have met the English proficiency requirement if they achieve a final overall grade of C or better.
  • Completion of a 3-credit academic English course from a Canadian post-secondary institution: Applicants can fulfill the English proficiency requirement by successfully completing a 3-credit academic English course at a Canadian post-secondary institution. The course must be transferable to UNF, and a minimum grade of C or higher is required.
  • Graduation from a secondary school in a listed country with English as the language of instruction: Applicants who have attended a secondary school for four or more consecutive years of full-time education in a country listed and approved by the Registrar, where English was the language of instruction, meet the English proficiency criteria.

Language Proficiency Exemptions

  • Secondary School Applicants: Applicants from secondary school will need to demonstrate graduation from a minimum of 4 years of consecutive study where the language of instruction was English. This ensures that individuals have acquired a substantial foundation in English during their secondary education.
  • Post-Secondary (or Higher) Applicants: Post-secondary applicants (college or university level) can qualify for an exemption by demonstrating completion of at least 1 year of full-time study where the language of instruction was English. Alternatively, they can fulfill this requirement by completing a 3+ credit academic English course from a Canadian post-secondary institution. This ensures that applicants have a solid understanding of English at an advanced academic level.
  • Medium of Instruction (MOI) Letters: UNF accepts Medium of Instruction (MOI) letters from an applicant’s institution. This option is applicable if an applicant’s studies were completed internationally, and the MOI is not confirmed to have been delivered in English. The MOI letter serves as evidence that the language of instruction during the applicant’s studies was English.
  • Accredited University’s English Preparation Program: UNF recognizes successful completion of an accredited university’s English preparation program as a valid exemption from ELP requirements. This acknowledges the advanced language skills gained through a specialized English language program.
  • Not Accepting Letters of Employment: UNF explicitly states that letters of employment will not be accepted as a basis for exemption from English Language Proficiency requirements. This reinforces the importance of academic qualifications and language proficiency gained through education.

These criteria are designed to provide flexibility for applicants who have already acquired a strong command of the English language through their educational experiences in specific contexts. Each criterion is tailored to different educational backgrounds and levels to ensure a fair and comprehensive assessment of language proficiency.
