The Graduate Management Admission Test or the commonly known GMAT is the most widely used test for graduate business school accepted by about 2400 universities and organizations in around 110 countries worldwide. GMAC, the test makers, have specifically designed the new GMAT Focus Edition to target the current-generation skills that are most relevant to success in graduate management programs.

GMAT 10th Edition or the GMAT Focus Edition

The GMAT Exam 10th Edition or the previous version of the GMAT was a computer- based test available both at test centers and online. This version of the GMAT was offered until the end of January, 2024, after which it was phased out. Now, only the GMAT Focus Edition or 11th Edition is being administered. Scores from the old GMAT will remain valid for up to five years from the date they were issued.

Who needs the GMAT?

The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is designed for individuals aspiring to pursue a graduate management education, primarily targeting those seeking admission to MBA programs at business schools worldwide. Students who are interested in other graduate-level business programs, such as Master’s in Finance, Master’s in Accounting, and other specialized management degrees can also take this test. The exam is also popular among working professionals who wish to advance their careers or transition to new fields by gaining a management degree. Overall, the GMAT is intended for anyone aiming to enhance their career prospects and demonstrate their readiness for the demands of a rigorous business program.

GMAT Exam Eligibility

There is no fixed eligibility for the GMAT, however:

  • Test takers must be at least 18 years old. If under 18, a parental consent form is required.
  • There are no specific educational prerequisites, however, having an undergraduate degree or its equivalent is considerable.
  • Candidates can take the GMAT up to five times in a rolling 12-month period, with a maximum of eight attempts overall.
  • On the day of your exam, provide acceptable and valid identification. ID requirements are strict and may vary by location but generally be legible and current with correct personal information.

GMAT Exam Pattern

All three sections of the GMAT exam are multiple-choice and use a computer-adaptive format, which adjusts to the test taker’s ability level. Each section starts with a question of average difficulty. Correct answers lead to more challenging questions, while incorrect answers lead to easier ones. This adaptive process continues until the section is complete, providing an accurate assessment of the test taker’s ability and resulting in a raw score for each section.

It is a little different from the previous GMAT edition and the total Score is no longer based on just Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning scores. What is a Good GMAT Score?

A good GMAT score varies depending on the business schools you are targeting, but generally, a score of 700 or above is considered competitive for top 10 MBA programs. For top 20 programs, a score between 650-700 is typically strong, while mid-tier schools often see scores between 600-650 as solid. Scores in the 550-600 range might be acceptable for lower-tier schools, but it’s essential to check individual school requirements. The global average GMAT score is around 565, while many top programs report average scores between 700-730. Ultimately, a good GMAT score aligns with the average scores of the programs you are applying to and complements the other aspects of your application, such as work experience, undergraduate GPA, letters of recommendation, and personal statements.
