Canada ASEAN Scholarships

The Canada ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED) Program is a short- term exchange program funded by the Government of Canada for students from ASEAN countries. The SEED scholarships are offered to students from the selected countries to conduct short-term study or research in Canadian post-secondary institutions in areas that contribute to the implementation of their 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It is a great opportunity for international students from developing countries to explore and learn in between students of other parts of the world. Eligible Countries for Canada ASEAN Scholarship

International students from the following ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries are eligible for Canadian ASEAN Scholarships-  Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos (Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR)), Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Scholarship Benefits

The Canadian ASEAN Scholarships offer the following benefits: 

• College/ Undergraduate (4 months)- CA$ 10,200
• College/ Undergraduate (8 months)- CA$ 15,900
• Graduate (4 months)- CA$ 10,200
• Graduate (5- 6 months)- CA$ 12,700

You can use the above funds for the following expenses:

• Economy airfare
• Ground transportation in Canada
• Living Expenses like accommodation, utilities, etc.
• Visa/ study or work permit fees
• Health Insurance
• Other Expenses like books and supplies

 Canada ASEAN Scholarship Eligibility Criteria 

• Students from one of the above mentioned ASEAN countries
• Engage in full- time studies or research in home country
• Paying tuition fees to the institution at the time of application and during the full duration of exchange
• Students intend to return to their home institution after fulfilment of scholarship to complete their studies.

• A Signed Copy of Privacy Notice Statement
• Letter of Intent
• Proof of full time enrollment from the home institution
• Letter of Support from home institution
• Letter of invitation from Canadian Supervisor

Canada ASEAN Scholarship Application Process 

• Research and find a Canadian post-secondary institution that offers a program related to your field of study.
• Ensure the institution is eligible to host international students.
• Contact the international office of the Canadian institution to express your interest in the SEED program.
• Follow the application procedures of the Canadian institution. This often includes submitting an application form, academic transcripts, a resume, and a letter of intent.
• The Canadian institution will review your application and, if approved, will nominate you for the scholarship.
• The institution will submit the nomination and your application package to Global Affairs Canada on your behalf.
• If successful, you’ll be notified about the results through your institution. Unsuccessful candidates won’t be notified. 

Important Dates

The application for Canada ASEAN Scholarships varies by institution; typically around January-February for the fall term and September-October for the winter term. We’ll update the exact dates for application as soon as the notification is released for the next round.

Selection process and criteria

Once you have finished submitting the application, the nomination and selection will be done by Global Affairs Canada. The evaluation is based on merit, your alignment with development priorities as well as regional distribution. Here are some of the factors considered for selection:

• The merit of research study to be taken and its benefits to ASEAN nations as well as Canadian institutions and supervisors
• Your research proposal or research field is linked with the 2030 Canada Sustainable Development Agenda 
• Your commitment to help combat poverty and narrow the development gap in your country or in other ASEAN region through your research
• Rankings submitted by the Canadian institution  

Tips for Applicants

• Align your research– Demonstrate your understanding of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Explain how your study or research in Canada will contribute to achieving these goals.
• Focus on Development– Highlight your commitment to addressing issues in your country in your letter of intent. Provide specific examples of how you plan to use your education to combat poverty and reduce the gap in your home country.
• Letter of Support– Ensure that your letter of support explains the nature of your study or research in Canada and the benefits in maximum one page. This should be dated within the last 6 months strictly.
• Check your Documents– Make sure that none of the documents exceed the size of 5 MB. All the documents that you submit should be either in .pdf, .jpg, .doc, .docx, .txt or .gif format.
• Highlight Leadership Skills- Mention any leadership positions you’ve held in student organizations, clubs, or community groups. Provide examples of initiatives you’ve led and the impact they had.
