Who Are The ASEAN Member States?

The Australia for ASEAN Scholarship offers support to international students from the following ASEAN member States- Brunei, Malaysia, SIngapore and Thailand, . Besides this, students who are citizens of Timor- Leste are also eligible to apply.

Eligibility requirements for Australia for ASEAN Scholarships

Before applying for the prestigious Australia for ASEAN Scholarship, it’s essential to understand the eligibility criteria that could pave your way to academic success.

Academic Eligibility

  • Be a citizen of one of the above ASEAN Member states 
  • Hold an undergraduate degree
  • English Language Proficiency tests:
    • IELTS: 6.5 with no band less than 6.0
    • TOEFL paper based: 575
    • TOEFL iBT- 90
    • PTE Academic- 61
  • MOE is also accepted for admissions if 
    • English was the language of instruction for your undergraduate degree
    • Or you studied in Australia within the last two-years
    • Or you completed over five years of study in one of the following English-speaking countries: Australia, UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, or the Republic of Ireland
  • No other English Language Test is accepted for scholarship admissions besides the above mentioned.

Other eligibility

  • You should not be married to, engaged to or a de facto of a person who holds, or is eligible to hold an Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency
  • You should not be a serving military personnel
  • You should not have received a long- term Australia in past 4 years
  • You should not hold convictions of any criminal activities

How to Apply for Australia for ASEAN Scholarship

The application process for Australia for ASEAN Scholarship is same as the Australia Awards Scholarship. Students from the following ASEAN countries: Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand can apply online at Australia Awards Indonesia. Whereas, students from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines and Vietnam plus Timor Leste should follow the same application procedure as Australia Awards Scholarships 2025 for your country. We have listed the step by step application procedure of Australia Awards Scholarship 2025 which will be quite helpful to understand the application for ASEAN Scholarship as well.

Important Dates

The Australia for ASEAN Scholarship applications begin in the middle of March every year for the programs commencing in the upcoming year. The deadline for this scholarship lies after 2 months from the starting date; i.e., in the middle of May every year. The applications for studies commencing in 2025 have closed on 15th, 2024 (11.59PM AEST). However, the final upcoming dates can only be ratified once the Australian Government announces it.

Selection Process and Criteria

The selection process for the Australia for ASEAN Scholarships begin by shortlisting the candidates based on eligibility. Keep in mind that only shortlisted candidates are contacted. So, if you are contacted, you will be moved forward for the interview. During your interview, you’ll be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Your academic competence
  • potential outcome, specifically advancing the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific: maritime, connectivity, economic development, and the sustainable development goals 2030. 
  • Your professional and personal leadership attributes (including relevant work experience) 

Further, if successful, you will be notified through the selection committee. However, you will be required to attend the preparatory training session mandated by the Australian Government. This includes course counselling, pre- departure briefing, university’s Introductory Academic Program and other required preparatory study on arrival in Australia.

You should have the current possible result of the IELTS, TOEFL or PTE Academic result. However, results obtained in the last 2 years from the application closing date is acceptable. 

Yes, disabled students can apply for the Australia for ASEAN Scholarship. In fact, they strongly encourage applications from women, people with disability and marginalized sections.

The Australia for ASEAN Scholarships are very competitive, as only a few awards are offered annually. In 2024, the Australian Government announced 75 scholarships only. Given the large number of applicants from ASEAN member states, the acceptance rate is relatively low.
