Eligibility Criteria For the GISMA

English Language Level: When you apply for admission, you will need to confirm that you are a ‘competent user of the English language,’ equivalent to or above the level needed to obtain a GCSE grade A–C. Various qualifications and language assessments are recognized as proof of English language proficiency, such as:

  • GCSEs (or equivalent): Grades A–C
  • A levels/AS levels (or equivalent): Pass
  • National Literacy /Functional English/Key Skills: Level 2
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): 5.5–6.5
  • Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: B2
  • Cambridge English Language Assessment: First Certificate in English
  • European Baccalaureate: L2, 7.5
  • International Baccalaureate: English Language A1, Standard level Grade 5 or Higher Level Grade 4

Computing Skills: As The Open University relies heavily on computer-based learning, you will need access to a laptop or PC with reliable internet connectivity. Essential computing skills include:

  • Starting up and shutting down a computer, using a mouse, keyboard, or equivalent input/output devices.
  • Using a word processing program (e.g., Microsoft Word) to create and save documents.
  • Re-opening documents and files you use or create.
  • Uploading or downloading files between a computer and the internet.
  • Creating and organizing folders on a computer.
  • Connecting a computer to the internet using a browser to explore websites.
  • Using email and attaching documents to emails.
  • Engaging in simple activities like online discussion forums.
  • Playing CDs and DVDs on a computer.
  • Having a basic understanding of computer security issues, such as using a virus checker.

  • Choose a Course: Browse through about 120 undergraduate courses and pick the one that suits your interests and career aspirations.
  • Check Credit Transfer: If you have studied at a higher education level before, you might be able to transfer credits, saving you time and money. Learn more about credit transfer and check if you are eligible.
  • Find Time for Study: With 70% of OU students working full time, flexible study options are available. Discover how to fit part-time study into your life and use our time planner to see your available study time.
  • Registration: Secure your spot by registering for your chosen qualification. No payment is needed at this stage. Simply select your preferred start date and click “Register Now.”
  • Choose Your Modules: Pick the modules you want to study in your first year. Some may be mandatory, while others can be chosen from a list of options.
  • Organize Funding: Let us know your preferred payment method for the selected modules, such as credit or debit card.
  • Complete Registration: Finalize your registration by confirming your payment method.
  • Prepare for Study: Once your payment is confirmed, you’ll gain access to useful resources, support, and become a part of the OU Community while getting familiar with your course materials.
  • Start Your Course: With registration complete, you’re all set to begin your OU journey. Throughout your studies, you’ll receive support from tutors, the Student Support Team, and fellow students.

Scholarships

The Open Futures Sanctuary Scholarship:

  • It provides free education to 12 new UK-resident students who have been displaced due to various reasons.
  • The scholarship covers up to 360 credits of undergraduate study, including full tuition costs.
  • Successful recipients also receive a free starter pack of equipment, such as a laptop and accessories.
  • Eligibility criteria include being a forced migrant, having a specific immigration status, limited income or receiving qualifying benefits, and being a new student in the academic year 2023/24.
  • Applications for the academic year 2023/24 are closed, and successful applicants will be notified by 28th July 2023.

Placements

  • The Santander Universities SME internship programme offers funding to support students and graduates to gain work experience in small and medium-sized businesses.
  • Over 9,000 students and graduates have been placed in workplaces through this programme.
